UK law firm backs Madagascar villagers against Rio Tinto in mine pollution claim

A group of rural villagers from Madagascar has launched a legal claim in Britain against Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO; LSE: RIO; ASX: RIO) over allegations that its mine has poisoned them with dangerous levels of uranium and lead.
The spot price of uranium continues to rise, boosted by pledges to triple nuclear power by mid-century, supply hiccups from producers such as Cameco (TSX: CCO; NYSE: CCJ) and the looming threat of a ban on Russian exports to the West.

Uranium Energy (NYSE: UEC) has expanded its landholdings in the Athabasca basin of Saskatchewan with the acquisition of exploration-stage projects held by Rio Tinto Exploration Canada, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto PLC (NYSE: RIO; LSE: RIO; ASX: RIO).
